Well, I've posted more lengthy thoughts on this topic on my own blog, but here's a summary of that, I guess.

The choice of Ratzinger (or Benedict, I guess I should say) is very troubling, especially to liberal Catholics like myself. Ratzinger, for example, supported the American bishops who said that John Kerry and others should be excommunicated, and implied that even somebody who voted for a pro-choice, pro-marriage equality candidate is working for evil in the world.

But he deserves a chance as Pope. Not that he'll change Church teaching in any significant way (he's already shaped it to a great degree), but as Pope he will have the chance to address what he thinks is really important, and those decisions are ultimately the ones on which his pontificate will be judged.
